Once again I am struck by your ability to break down complex ideas in a way that makes them accessible and that ties them back to the larger human implications. There is a TedX MidAltlantic talk by Marcus J. Ranum up on YouTube that discusses these protocols, and makes a very interesting point about how small design decisions at the beginning have had big (and costly) implications. "Laziness+genius+momentum=unpredictably baroque systems." Thank you, Olga and Kristen. I'm watching the Ranum video, which I find very interesting. I'm not sure whether it is fundamental enough to include in the Sprout, but I'm grateful that you pointed me to it.

I'm glad she sent me here because I'll be teaching, or maybe mentoring is a better word, a course on Multiliteracies this January, which colleagues and I have been working on the past few years, with latest rendition at http://goodbyegutenberg.pbworks.com/. Thanks for your further insights Howard, well worth our infotention! My thoughts on the materials mentioned in my last comment converged with a current SCoPE seminar on network literacies and blended so well there that I wrote a long post in one of the SCoPE forums. I find it fascinating to think about the architecture this way, as innovation being reserved for the endpoints of the network. I worked on tcp/ip as a technical writer (before I became became a teacher years later) when it was emerging in unix operating systems in the mid 80's. And as Howard said, very few people were using it, which made those of us playing around with it wonder where it would go.
